Staged in a space purpose built for entertainment, ceremony and spectacle, Banqueting House events have been leaving an impression for nearly 400 years. James I built the Banqueting House as a dramatic showpiece, the country’s first thoroughly classical building, inside the vast Whitehall Palace. The palace has gone and only the Banqueting House remains, James united the thrones of England and Scotland and here we use his royal arms with the English lion and Scottish unicorn. The interior of the palace is famously dominated by a vast ceiling painted by Rubens. The Banqueting House pattern comes from drawings by Palladio that its architect Inigo Hones used for framing the ceiling. Banqueting House has been the backdrop of spectacular feasts and celebrations for almost 400 years – now, this magnificent neo-classical hall in the heart of London could be the setting for your dinner or reception.
